AlmaLinux 9.4 won't boot after applying grub2 update

Describe the issue
After applying grub2 updates to AlmaLinux 9.4, rebooting in UTM results in the BIOS error "Synchronous Exception at 0x000000013BB039EC"

Procedure:

• Create a fresh VM using the AlmaLinux arm64 9.4 ISO and reboot.
• Observe that it boots successfully. The grub2 package version is 2.06-77 (rpm -q grub2-common).
• Apply the update for grub2 with command sudo dnf update grub2-common. The new package version is 2.06-80.
• Reboot the VM.
• The VM fails to boot prior at a point prior to displaying the grub menu. The error message is "Synchronous Exception at 0x000000013BB039EC"

Configuration

• UTM Version: 4.5.4
• macOS Version: 14.6.1
• Mac Chip (Intel, M1, ...): M1

I can confirm this behaviour on a recently updated RHEL 9.4 virtual machine.

After a fresh install the machine uses grub2-common-2.06-82 ... , the boot problem is gone.

You also should check the list of drives UTM shows you. In my case the primary reason for the failure was an additional USB drive.
