Wallpapers not downloading, plus ugly markup under the quotes #440

Hello, I just installed Variety on a new installation of Ubuntu 18.04. Two things going wrong here:

  1. The wallpapers just aren't downloading from most of the named sources. I like Wallhaven especially, and use that a lot. It all works fine on my laptop. The only sources that work are NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day, and the Peter Levi flickr pics. The Bing picture of the day is there, but I'm pretty sure that it's not changing every day. There's no sign of anything having been downloaded in the designated folders. so I'm a bit confused. This all works fine on the laptop.

  2. Some ugly HTML on the quote, as seen here: capture_20210725_120339_00001

Thanks and all the best

Well, it's fairly clear that there's not much maintenance going on here any more. That's a bit sad, as it's a really nice application. I'm afraid that I'm a long way from having the knowledge that I would need to get involved with development, but maybe one day maybe I will!

Hi @heatopher. Can you please be a bit more specific about the sources - I could not get the part about "This all works fine on the laptop." - does it mean you have one computer where all sources work fine, and another where some of them don't? Are they on the same network, is there a proxy or firewall configured somewhere?

Can you run with variety -v, let it run for some time with only the non-working sources enabled, and then attach the ~/.config/variety/variety.log file here. As it stands, the bugreport is "this does not work for me", but I cannot reproduce.

Regarding quotes - which quote source is this coming from, and is this happening for every quote from it, or just some? I tested briefly all currently available quote sources in Variety and didn't hit quotes like this. Of course, it's completely possible some random quotes out there don't parse well in Variety, but it shouldn't be the norm.
