MacroTube down again, most likely the YouTube site changed something...I think
this plugin may be down for good as it is not really supported anymore - a
shame really, as MacroTube appears to be, amazingly enough, the ONLY YouTube
plugin for Windows Media Center

A new version of the YouTube.xml is available now under the Downloads section.
I've tested it on Win 7 32/64 versions with Windows Media Center. Please post
any issues here or if the error is different raise a new Issue. Make sure the
original file is overwritten by the update and rename it to YouTube.xml.
Restart your machine to be sure Windows Media Center picks up the change. Note
this does not fix YouTube HD - that has its own xml file.

Updated to fix latest YouTube page change.
To use this file, find the file
C:\ProgramData\Jasmio\MacroTube\Providers\YouTube.xml and replace it with the
YouTube_20110827.xml and rename it to YouTube.xml
Tips:
1. This file may be replaced by an older version(downloaded by the Macrotube
application) if you toggle the YoutTube video service under the Windows Media
Center->Macrotube->Manage Video Services. If this happens replace it again as
above.
2. The c:\ProgramData folder is hidden, so type it in the run command or title
bar of Windows Explorer to view it.

I updated Youtube.xml and the HD version from the August update, worked for a
while, now getting back the original error now (The updated XML files are still
in place). Can somebody else confirm it still works fine for them?
Original comment by AshleyPr...@gmail.com

I'll test this tonight. Assuming you replaced the existing files(if you leave
the old files and rename them, you will get a youtube icon in macrotube which
will not work and one that does) and have not enabled/disabled services in
Macrotube settings then it is possible that YT have changed their format again.
Could you try a number of videos, as occasionally there were some that would
not play even with the fix?

@AshleyPr:
This still works for me too. If this happens for all videos then somehow it
must be using the old config files. Post a url for the video you have tried if
you still have the issue.

After a week break, I tried youtube on macrotube only to get the message 'This
video is either no longer available, or unplayable for technical reasons'. It
seems to me that youtube changed their codes again. Anyone else have the same
issue. I'm just waiting for the next updated xml...

methods a couple of days ago, thats why youtube on macrotube does not work
anymore. Any chance anybody is working on fixing this?
Original comment by h...@shifrasmarthomes.com

I've picked this up and will see if it can be fixed. Every time it breaks it is
possible that eventually youtube may make it impossible to derive the video
urls from their pages.

Lads, Happy to say that the instructions posted by Jack Luminous on his entry
http://code.google.com/p/macrotube-providers/issues/detail?id=4#c0 fixed the
(my) issue. Just open the youtube.xml file on notepad and edit the line as
instructed by him. Also I attached the edited file for download.

@Dominic - The YouTubeHD.xml file on the current downloads should work, as this
did not need the fix. Try downloading the file - make sure to replace the file
and not leave the old copy in the folder. I have just tried this myself and it
worked fine - there are some videos which just don't play.

Yes, we're back with a non-functioning Macrotube. This is the KILLER APP for
WMC. Hopefully someone with knowledge can update the XML file? or teach us
how to do it on our own? Thanks!

On the other hand: in a few months we will have Windows 8 and it is very likely
that a Youtube, Vimeo app etc will be available.
Original comment by RudiHend...@gmail.com

I've started working on this.
@Rudi - Thanks for reporting the issue. Windows 8 won't have any native support
for Vimeo,Youtube etc in WMC and I like a lot of people with HTPCs and Win 7
won't be bothered to move to Win 8.
I'll post a fix soon.

Cool! Thanks for the work again! The plugin is really appreciated!
I don't expect Youtube, Vimeo etc to be standard in WMC, but it will most
likely come available as an app. Just like Youtube is now for WP7. And in the
Consumer Preview Windows 8 had a Vimeo app. Anyway: until that time and as long
as I (and a lot of other people are still using Windows 7): thanks for the
great work on Macrotube!

This was a bit harder to work out this time and has taken a lot of after hours
work. Just when it looked like it was fine, it stopped working again on
Sunday.
In the meantime the YoutubeHD does work and in fact retrieves the same videos -
it just tries to play the HD version if it exists, whereas the Youtube provider
defaults to the MP4 video.
Original comment by sbe...@iventris.net
on 17 Jul 2012 at 10:36
Thank you for the explanation -- I had no idea that YouTubeHD works and
retrieves the same videos. I presumed it only retrieved a subset. This is
great news, indeed. Thank you. Macrotube continues to be the most valuable
plug-in for my WMC. I cringe when I think of a future when it's no longer
supported/no longer works.
Original comment by jrdeut...@gmail.com

Yeah I looked at youtubeHD also. Pretty good 10 foot interface and all the
normal youtube content, and no problems to create a launch icon for it within
WMC. One problem, and show stopper in my book - using a remote (what a 10 foot
interface is intended for) means the Search feature cant be used as it doesnt
pop up an onscreen keyboard interface. Do many users out there really find
youtube useful if you cant look for what you want and you have to just look at
only what it offers by default !?
I would happily pay a small fee for a decent, stable, youtube interface to WMC,
and I'm sure many others would too.
Keep up the great work, just hurry it up ok ;-) haha

Paul - I'm confused by your comment a bit. YouTubeHD is a "source" within
Macrotube, right? If so, how do you make a source within Macrotube a launch
icon within WMC?
WRT on-screen keyboard, you are right, it's a miss. But I can certainly type
in QWERTY search terms using my remote (using the number keys and tapping
multiple times to get the right letter up there), or, by using my Logitech
DiNovo Mini qwerty keyboard remote to type in directly.
Alternatives to Macrotube (which pale in comparison) include the YouTube app
within Boxee for Windows, and the YouTube app for XBMC.
Original comment by jrdeut...@gmail.com
on 18 Jul 2012 at 1:35
@Paul - the issue with the on screen keyboard is not a Youtube/Macrotube issue
but a rather obscure WMC center setting. This link may help you -
http://mymce.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/on-screen-keyboard-in-windows-media-center
-doesnt-appear/ - a reboot after changing the setting is advisable.
It may not resolve your specific issue as it may also be an issue with the
remote control. It worked for me. I have a Logitech Harmony One.

Sorry guys I didnt explain very well. I was referring to using a standard
browser with the URL youtube.com/hd
Seen it mentioned on other WMC forums - ie you set up an icon on the WMC menu
to launch a browser in kiosk mode straight to that URL. Works ok except for
the search section where you cant enter text with only a remote.
I'd rather use MacroTube of course but without that new XML fix and youtube
keep moving the goal posts.
Original comment by paulstut...@gmail.com
on 19 Jul 2012 at 11:04
@Paul - when referring to YouTubeHD in this thread, YouTubeHD is a source
within Macrotube that works just fine right now. In other words, if you stick
with the YouTubeHD source within MacroTube, you're good to go. Based on the
explanation above, it seems to be the preferred source anyway, as it tries HD
first before dropping down to normal res. So, no need for the YouTube
LeanBack GUI as far as I can see.

So I'm up and running now using the YouTubeHD source, used the youtubehd.xml

"no longer available" error. Is that fixable ?
Original comment by paulstut...@gmail.com
on 21 Jul 2012 at 6:52
@Paul - Videos flagged as age restricted cannot be shown, as they require user
confirmation to proceed. Also there are some videos which just can't be parsed
correctly.
Watch this page for an update on a MacroTube Helper app which is due any day
now and needs beta testers.
