"Three days after Christmas last year, OrthoNY, one of the region’s largest orthopedic medical practices, was targeted by computer hackers who stole the financial and personal information of patients.
That was Dec. 28, 2023.
In a letter dated Oct. 30, OrthoNY notified patients that their information had been hacked. The company provided information on what patients can do to try to protect themselves.
“An unauthorized third party attempted to infiltrate (the company’s) computer network and demand a payment,” the company wrote in a letter recently sent out to patients.
The company said it initiated an investigation that concluded nine months later, on Sept. 5. No reason was given for the length of the investigation, who the hackers were or whether they were paid the ransom. The company also posted a notice on its website on Nov. 4 alerting patients to the data breach."
