The following paper:

T. K. Attwood, D. B. Kell, P. McDermott, J. Marsh, S. R. Pettifer, and D. Thorne, “Calling International Rescue: knowledge lost in literature and data landslide!,” Biochemical Journal, vol. 424, pp. 317-333, 2009. See http://www.biochemj.org/bj/ev/424/0317/bj4240317_ev.htm

has a number of nice references to various experiments that try to use the facilities of HTML for scholarly publishing. The paper is not new but may be useful nevertheless...

Actually... it may be a bit misleading to add a reference to this paper. It indeed describes a number of issues arising of the necessities of reading (scholarly) publications (need for all kinds of interactive facilities, reaching out to remote data, etc), but it realized (in 2008-2009!) it through a very special PDF reader (called Utopia), and that may be misleading in this White Paper. I close this issue without further action. (Pity, because the examples are nice and would be much more natural in an EPUB-WEB environment.)
