Deciding between the two color scheme options: The first examining the range of drought. Need to quantify what the range and variability are to better identify how to represent that on the plots. The second highlighting the areas experiencing relative drought. Need to confirm that above 0 in index indicates no relative drought (i.e., relatively wet)

If you want to only show locations with values below zero, you can also use .where to mask values above 0.
