Consider allowing paid hospitality and donation-Requested hospitality #418

Open rfay opened 10 years ago

rfay commented 10 years ago

There are so many good businesses that provide hospitality to cyclists, often in places where volunteer hosts could never keep up. I think we should allow them, Mark them with a different color on the map and clearly mark their profile.

We'd also need to do some publicity about a change like this.

Also, the suggested annual donation to Ws should probably be higher for commercial ventures (assuming we do that).

We should probably have donation-suggested and commercial hosts as separate, and mark both of those categories on their profile (which should have a bit of a different design).

Membership type should go into the user object so it can be reported by the various services (and shown on the map as different color). Mobile apps will want to differentiate these as well.

I would love to see this incorporated into the site. Another feature that would give cyclists more options, especially useful in areas with low host density, would be a way to mark good places to put down your sleeping bag. This would be a user driven thing. On a recent trip I was lucky enough to cross paths with someone who had just come from where I was going. I called him the next three nights and got great camping advice. This kind of information would be helpful to have on WS.

This would be a great service to touring cyclists, but would likely be very controversial since we've always been about free accommodations only.

Related: Services like bike mechanics.

Yea, I'm tending to think negatively about this one already, I encountered a few CouchSurfing on my recent trip who had requested renumeration. It immediately made me think badly about them and CS.

I don't think it's a bad idea but would be happier if it was decoupled from the current path. Maybe anything like this would be better thought of as separate entities and as a separate search.

I fear that if people realise they can get money from hosting there would be a reduction in the number of good will hosts. It's that special reciprocal nature that makes the WS community so special.

We would have to be very careful about introducing this kind of thing. Part of that care would be asking membership what they thought of it and being VERY explicit about who and what.

Even then I'm afraid we'd wind up having all kinds of problems.

I would think that a mandatory "donation" would be required for a commercial entity. It should be much larger than our member donation. They are receiving very specific advertising to over 50k.

I hadn't thought of this as a way to raise money. Ads on the site were mentioned by a number of members as potentially acceptable.

Again, we'd have to be VERY, VERY careful about how we would roll out such a thing should we decide to do so.
