Gnome-terminal has a vertical selection feature -- if you hold ctrl + shift and make a selection using the mouse, it will select a rectangular region of output. This is a very convenient feature with various usecases:
you may copy a content of a diff file without the need to remove the "-"/"+" signs afterwards
you may copy a part of Python code, YAML document or other text which is sensitive to tabulations
it allows bulk processing of a part of some regular data, i.e. logs
it allows working with tables
...and many other uses
