I just had a similar problem that also generate lots of "(installer)" zombie
processes. Solved by running the
following commands:
sudo chmod +s /Applications/Tunnelblick.app/Contents/Resources/openvpnstart
sudo chown root /Applications/Tunnelblick.app/Contents/Resources/openvpnstart
The system log showed the following errors, always before launching a new
zombie process:
9/12/09 11:51:29 PM Tunnelblick[1266] openvpnstart helper has missing set uid
bit
9/12/09 11:51:29 PM Tunnelblick[1266] Repairing Application...

I don't think the following:
NOTE: setsockopt TCP_NODELAY=1 failed (No kernel support)
should be happening but the log extract left off the part before the connection
is established, where OpenVPN
would list parameters (assuming verb is set to 3 or higher) and show how the
connection is established, so I
can't really tell.
Can you post your config files (client & server), too? (Suitably obfuscated, of
course.)
