Replace jargon word in label and documentation #303

Closed getsnoopy closed 11 months ago

getsnoopy commented 11 months ago

This commit replaces a jargon word with a clearer alternative to improve the documentation and GitHub labels used throughout the organization.

We're fine with the existing word.

An "impact", used in the figurative sense (which is proscribed and is considered jargon), means "strong/violent/marked effect". Saying "evaluate the impact of your change" would mean "evaluate the strong/violent/marked effect of your change", which is a leading statement (akin to the insulting question used in adolescence, "When did you come out of the closet?"). Not all changes have strong effects. There's no reason to be using such a word, especially in a professional context.

I appreciate that you have your own definition, but that's not how we use the term.

getsnoopy commented 11 months ago

It's not my own definition, but the definition of the term according to basically any reputable dictionary.

But more importantly, the question is: how do you use the term? And do my updates still reflect the sense in which you use the term? If so, then the changes should be incorporated because the term that I changed it to isn't problematic, while the term being used right now is.

The definition you link to doesn't talk about "jargon", "violent", "marked", etc. Changing this label would be quite disruptive and costly, and I don't think it's been made evident thus far that it's worth the trouble.
