Preparation for 3.0.0 #621

This pull request is in preparation for the 3.0.0 release. Once merged into master, several adaptors (S3, HDFS, GridFTP) will be split off into their own repos.

Note: the build are failing due to a timeout caused by building the HDFS shadowJar. Will ignore this for now and proceed with the merge and split
