Use the Asus firmware restorer software to reload firmware. That will bring
router back from the dead. You can find it on the Asus website.

Already tried. The router did not go into recovery mode even after several
times trying. Kept showing the same dimmed led (power,wifi and usb).

To enter recovery mode...do the following:
Remove power cord
Press and hold reset button
Plug in power cord
Release reset button after 3 sec. Bottom LED will be flashing indicating that
router is in recovery.

Hi,
First I need to say "dont worry" even you update the third party software Asus
cover warranty , I got this update from Asus team also they respect thirdpary
softwares.
Follow the below steps to recover your router. mostly after recovery is
completed wait for max 30 min to auto reboot else u unplug the power cord and
insert powercord during that time press reset it will come up, I faced the same
problem and i have recovered.
====================================
Thank you for contacting ASUS wireless support. It seems your router went into
a fail safe mode called Rescue Mode. You will need to perform the following.
Note that this does require Windows, so I apologize if this is inconvenient for
you.
Using a Windows computer, you can try the firmware restoration tool included
with the support CD or from our support site.
When using the firmware restoration tool, please use a wired ethernet
connection from the computer to the router. Please also temporarily turn off
the firewall on your connected computer and use a static IP. Here is also a
tutorial for it: http://youtu.be/HIoQ5Qd11pU
Please restore using the latest firmware located on our support site:
http://support.asus.com/ServiceHome.aspx?SLanguage=en
Please note that files will be compressed when downloaded from our support
site. You will need to unzip or decompress the file to use it.
In the firmware restoration tool, add the .TRX firmware file.
Allow several minutes for the process to complete. You may get an error stating
that it failed, it is possible the router did not reboot when the timer is up.
Allow up to 5-10 mins for the device to reboot. The router will be fully
rebooted once the power LED, wireless, an LAN port lights are on.
If there is still issues, it may be hardware related and we can have the unit
returned for further diagnostic and/or repair. Please provide your full mailing
and contact information.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
========
Please use the same firmware what u used last to recover the router.
=-========
We have great respect for the open source community and their commitment to the
public. You will not void warranty by switching toopen source firmware. Many of
our other routers allow support by default. If you have issues with a certain
firmware, you can use our firmware restore tool(in utility software) to return
things back to the original firmware if necessary.
I appreciate your feedback. Happy Holidays!
======
All the best :-)
Thanks

@tiber,
"To enter recovery mode...do the following:

I did like what you wrote above but still the same thing. Power led did not
blink but instead just showing a very dimmed lit.
@kanagasa, thanks but after several tries I still can't get the router to boot
into rescue mode. I think I'll sent it for RMA.

Yes, even you tried all but still you can see only the dimmed lit then its a
hardware problem if it is under warranty You can raise a case with Asus and
they will provide the address where to send. You will get a new router as
replacement.
Thanks

Issue 717 has been merged into this issue.

I work in IT (formerly in the USA before immigrating to Singapore).
My ISP (M1) gives the RT-n56u away with a two year subscription. Almost all my
friends have them. Anyway, many of us have experienced this issue. The router
will glitch into "rescue mode", usually during the automated firmware download.
As mentioned above, you must change the settings on your network and run the
Windows app to fix it. If you do not own a Windows PC you are out of luck. Well
not completly, you can set up FTP on yoy Linux machine or Mac.
I called customer support. The guy in India was rude when I told him I do not
own a Windows machine. I hung up.
I tried the email support. They told me were to take it. I did so, but the
queue was long. I just tossed the brand new free router in the rubbish. The
email support tried to follow up a few days later. I told them, I disposed of
the router and bought a different brand. It took them two weeks to come back
with, "please let us know if you need anything else".
The router I bought is not dual band. It has less features. It is slower. It
costs a bit moure. But, it works without any problems. That is what counts.
