Attempting to download the clips for Frozen Planet fails.

I can watch most of the clips in the browser. A few, such as the 4th one (a highlight, not from an episode) does not -- and that one will give a geolocation error from youtube-dl. But the rest can be played without location restriction, but not downloaded.

Works fine with rtmpdump 2.4.r96.fa8646d. Are you using the latest rtmpdump?

Macport reports it is up to date

I'll see about getting macports to update from one version of 2.4 to another version of 2.4 ... (geez, bump the release numbers people :-)

Seems Macports uses the stable 2.4 release, namely 2.4.r0. There are several fixes between 2.4.r0 and 2.4.r96.

Which commit corresponds to r96?

I just cloned the rtmpdump git. There was a bunch of commits in 2011, including something in july that has a comment of "v2.4 changes", followed by some april commits out of sequence (I suspect either a rebase or a late merge), then more stuff in 2011. Then, in 2012, a bunch of stuff out of date order. Then stuff in the last half of 2013. Then july 2014, then december 2015.

But no tags. No branches. No sign of reordering.

It's like someone stripped all side branches, development tests, rebasing history, dead branches, etc., all of that removed, leaving only the master trunk. A tiny bit of visible branching back in 2009.

And apparently, no changes/commits in 9 months, yet no release in that time.

I strongly suspect that this is not the real master repository, but mearly what the developers are willing to publish and not rebase/edit.

Let me compile fa8646 and see how it works.

OK, so:

There is an explicit "make install" command to use (instead of just copying rtmpdump into /opt/local)
There is a "prefix=" to change from /usr/local to /opt/local
There is another prefix in the librtmp directory's Makefile
With all that changed, I get a different error.

Not a system-level crash reporter, just a command line problem.

Try this and run youtube-dl again:

Alright. I did a full clone of rtmpdump. Made sure that I'm on fa864 Uninstalled the old, installed the new.
