vfork should always returns a valid PID even if the exec that follows fails.
For example if 'cc' is missing I get the following output from make:
$ make foo.o
cc -c -o foo.o foo.c
make: vfork: Function not implemented
This is because vfork is returning -1.
Instead I would expect to see:
make: cc: Command not found
