Guidelines for issue tracker #129

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

I would like to establish a set of rules for what and how we post on the issue
tracker. Currently, this is the only way for project communication, and we get
a lot of good ideas and discussions here. I think we can improve communication
even more.

I feel that some of the discussions might be more suitable for a forum-type of
communication. For example, gameplay questions (where do I find NNN?) or the
everlasting question "when is the next update". Any ideas on free forum boards
that we could use for Andor's Trail? Preferably a large provider that will stay
around even a few years from now. Would moving the project page to github or
sourceforge add forum capabilities?

Anyway, my view of this issue tracker is that it should work as a list of
"things" that should could or should be done to improve the game or project.

My initial suggestion of guidelines for issue tracker posts is as follows:
 - Please refrain from posting meaningless threads, one word (or short) non-sense posts, or the such.
 - All post must be made in English
 - Discussions should be constructive, and preferably suggest a solution to a problem in addition to the problem description.
 - All improvment suggestions should be justified by either a problem description or a description of how this would improve the game experience.

Please give you thoughts on this.

That would help keep this page from getting cluttered...
As for a forum for other topics, you could always register at one of the
existing Android forums and create a thread there for discussion, such as
XDA-Developers or Android Central.

I found no project forum on sourceforge.net or github.com. A quick google
search look for android forum showed only specialized forums related to its
main site. Chances for a project sub-forum is very low IMO.

How about using a/some wiki page(s) for forum-like questions ?
Guides will become regular wiki pages.

Also giving someone else access to moderate both issues and wiki is a given. I
kinda suggested this earlier in issue 98 comment 4,
http://code.google.com/p/andors-trail/issues/detail?id=98#c4.

Oskar you should make a forum for this game.
because i find myself wanting to ask questions...that arent really issues,
reports, etc.

and i dont just want to spam your page here haha.

You can enable limited forums on your Sourceforge project page. They do not
have half the features of a normal forum but the rest of Sourceforge's features
make up for that.

I think a forum would improve the issue tracker much. Currently there is no
other way than filling a bug if you want to tell something to the community or
ask for help. (or the new update)

You might want to check out pbworks.com. It's free and has a good amount of
flexibility. No ads for other websites either, just their own ads.

Update on this: We are currently trying out a forum. Hopefully we can make it
public in a few days. More updates soon.

The forums are now open! Thank you sdevaney for all help!

http://andors.techby2guys.com/

These forums can be used as an easier way for us to communicate about things
that do not really fit into this issue tracker.

Please make a post and say hi :)

Forums are now in production. I'm adding a link to the forums in-game for
v0.6.8 .

Also, we now have guidelines ready for what fits into the issue tracker and
what fits better in the forums (hint: most discussions are better handled in
the forums). See the following link:
http://code.google.com/p/andors-trail/wiki/Forums_vs_issuetracker

I'm marking this as ready for v0.6.8, meaning the link to the forums in-game
will be added.
