artillery towers? #2

@StanleySweet I probably find some time to update the mod during the holidays. What art and how long would it take to make a Han artillery tower?

The Han would be ideal candidate for experimenting with wall turrets and wall sub units. Have the requirements merged yet in the main tree?

StanleySweet commented 4 years ago

Would be nice to update terra magna and make this mod a dependency so that we don't have to maintain both mods.

As for the artillery tower assuming some historical evidence I'd say a few hours?

No I'm pushing for it but someone needs to review D1958

udeved commented 4 years ago

Yes, sounds fine to me to maintain only one mod.

I haven't looked for artillery towers specifically, but the Han use already repeating crossbows. It would be almost safe to assume they had similar heavier type crossbows, similar to roman scorpion or other bolt shooters. I mean, if they miniaturize the thing to be portable? Apart, a variant tower could also be armed with the already existing sushe type.

Indeed, quick look around... sounds like a "gatling" crossbow to me.

In 99 BC, mounted multiple bolt crossbows were used as field artillery against attacking nomadic cavalry

I would also assume a naval variant existed.

Interesting :) Currently though artillery unbalancing are being questionned and we are not sure the'll be used for A24. I hope so though.

Do you mind sharing the source?

udeved commented 4 years ago

Sure, even though I don't find wikipedia a reliable source, here it is, I agree with them in this case. Han China was militarily as inventive as Rome, in my view, at least. :)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_the_Han_dynasty https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repeating_crossbow

Makes sense to me they put much effort in walls and all types of crossbows to fend of mobile nomads on horses.

Btw, a Roman cavalry crossbow has also been unearthed few years ago, but I can't remember the time period.

As for buildings, what buildings should Han get? All 3? Stables, Archery, Workshop? In the use-new branch, I played around with this, fortresses also repair mechanical units.

Siege weapons ...

StanleySweet commented 4 years ago

I think they should get the same as used in A24

udeved commented 4 years ago

So workshop only addition?

udeved commented 4 years ago

I think this could trigger a few hours art work? :yum:

Large mounted crossbows known as "bed crossbows" were used as early as the Warring States period. Mozi described them as defensive weapons placed on top the battlements.

From siege weapon link.

StanleySweet commented 4 years ago

Not sure yet :/ I have a lot of things to do :/

udeved commented 4 years ago

The mod should be in a24 shape now. I added temporary placeholder towers.

A few small things, the cavalry bow is ill timed, it fires twice the rate as needed. There is art work to be done eventually, eg adding more hard points to siege, eventually defining what consists of base infantry and cavalry outfi so to kind of standardize them being professional army. I tried adding a 3rd guy for the shoushe, but the editor complains then.

udeved commented 4 years ago

Regarding artillery tower, not sure, but Han should have a ballista tower equivalent.

udeved commented 4 years ago

@StanleySweet

I used the tang tower you made for millenium ad and it has become the Han bolt tower.

Could you eventually tweak the tower's roof to match Han roof and add bolt props?

udeved commented 3 years ago

@m7600 Would it be possible to push the wonderful new fortress and big tower into a branch? The dae and textures would be enough. https://wildfiregames.com/forum/topic/38729-addition-of-han-chinese-to-0ad/page/5/
