You can't normally use bromite webview as an alternative to Google's webview, use magisk module to install bromite webview if you're rooted. Yes k9 mail client is based on webview so it basically crashes when there is no webview (to check which webview's are available or being used, goto developer options and see webview) The webview which can be used by almost all Android OS normally is by Google(Chrome, Canary, Android webview) other than that nothing will work unless you use xposed module or magisk module. Xposed module can help you install any webview. If you don't want to root then there's nothing you can do to change the webview to bromite. It's a very common sense thing in Android. Oh, that's good to know. The description on the UAD package list actually contradicts that piece of information. It presents org.bromite.webview as an alternative to com.google.android.webview. That's why I tried it in the first place. Here’s what the description says:
Bromite is open-source, privacy oriented Webview replacement: https://www.bromite.org/system_web_view

Do I understand the above right that Bromite Webview will work, if it’s installed right, using xposed or magisk? This is all pretty new to me...

I’d like to root, but I can’t do it on my Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (MediaTek version). At least I tried to do it years ago, but (if I remember right) Xiaomi wanted those who want to do it to identify themselves by sending their phone number to Xiaomi. Xiaomi would then send a code with which to enable root. I haven’t looked into the matter again after that, but perhaps there are new ways (not depending on Xiaomi’s good will) to do that.

I don’t seem to have that item on my Android’s developer options. Perhaps it's because my Android version is so old, (6.0, and apparently can’t be upgraded)?

I opened this issue because of the partly and potentially misleading package description on the package list of the UAD. Perhaps it would be good to change the description first (if developers agree that it's a good idea), and then close this issue?
Thanks for useful information and advice!

I've come here because of the same issue. That description is very misleading, because I lost acess to my VPN app and important parts of my bank app.

Describe the issue Just for information, when I uninstall com.google.android.webview, K-9 Mail stops working properly. The program launches and lists messages, but when I try to open a message, the program crashes. I tried installing org.bromite.webview as a substitute, but it didn't help. With com.google.android.webview present, K-9 Mail works flawlessly.
