  • The idea is simple. It's a shame to use batteries to monitor an energy source. Energio clips on a circuit and harvests energy to measure and communicate your energy consumption via Wi-Fi. By using Wi-Fi, the homeowner doesn't need to add a gateway to convert from another wireless protocol to IP.

  • The current transformer used to measure the current in an energy monitoring system simultaneously charges a supercapacitor that powers the energy monitor and radio. With only a 60 W load on the measured circuit, our goal is to report the min, max, and average energy draw once per hour. Higher draws can be reported more frequently. Lower draws, less frequently.

I've just discovered this - didn't realise anyone else was working on it. I've got a Pro Mini with super capacitor running off harvested power and transmitting every 20s (it's variable as I have to keep the capacitor voltage below 3.6 for the transmitter). I attempt to calculate the power from the capacitor voltage along with the known drain from the Pro Mini (it sleeps when capacitor low and stays awake when high). It can survive several hours of power cut and last indefinitely if we go on holiday as the fridge and freezer draw sufficient to keep the capacitor charged at the survival level. I'm learning as I go and would like to find a discussion group. I'm now trying to fit coefficients to my formula but discussion would be useful as there other ways of measuring the power flow.
