Word Count #839

As a write trying to use Sigil, I am very interested in the word count. This is
a pretty basic function and has been found in word processors for a long time.
Right now I have to cut and paste all the text into a Word doc and use its
native word count function. Tedious for big files.

I looked hard but I didn't see this requested anywhere.

Thanks for a wonderful program, Sigil is the only decent Epub editor out there
and I love watching it 'grow up'.

Not sure how this can classified as a "Low Priority"?

Come on. Word count is totally fundamental to the way the software is used.

It is used to create books! Word count is totally fundamental, and this should
be top priority to implement.

It has now been over a year since this was suggested.

Any developments?

Well, that's not exactly the best way to get a feature implemented by a couple
of volunteers working on the program in their spare time... And editing is
probably a slightly higher priority than word count for an editor.

Much better to help would be why its important to implement, etc. Note that
calibre can do a word count as can word processors. Not to say it isn't still
on the list to do, since it is (especially now that the low level code to
handle words is in place), but bug fixes and epub specific issues tend to get
done first.

OP here... due to this and other issues I have since given up on Sigil for
composition. I am much happier writing in Scrivener, compiling to epub and
tweaking in Sigil. So word count in Sigil is no longer important to me, since I
can get that from my main software.

Sigil is great for editing Epubs. What I want to do is write books.

The reason it is important is because of the workflow.

It makes sense add in a chapter at a time into Sigil because the ultimate
worflow is usually Word --> Sigil --> Calibre (mobi) and then uploaded to
Amazon for the Kindle.

The nature of the process is that much of what works in Word e.g images etc
doesn't work as well when you bring it over into Sigil (and ultimately into
Kindle - mobi format), and so lots of words end up getting cut or added to.

So, whilst the main editing may be done in other applications, the one crucial
thing that is missing is knowing how long the book is, which is crucial both to
an understanding of how long it will be, and also how much you can charge for
it.

As it stands you have to cut and paste the finished tweaked version back into
Word, chapter by chapter, in order to again know how long the book is.

A rather painful and long-winded process that would be immediately rendered
null and void if there were a basic word count in Sigil.

Hence my assertion that Word Count should be very much a High Priority.

This function was provided as part of issue 102, and if it remains will be part
of the next release - no estimate of when that will be though.
