Domain Training Tools

Domain knowledge management system. Targetted towards firms in knowledge-heavy industries with a larger number of employees.

• Tracks who knows what in an organisation.
  • Competency matrix.
  • Domain experts.
• Tracks completed training.
• Use for ensuring low bus factor.
• Use for performance reviews based on skill gains.
• Use for mentoring schemes.

Open to interpretation what this would involve, but you would probably want to:

• Define knowledge areas.
  • Might be cool to do a tech-web inspired style. Though this may not be realistic.
• Define staff.
  • Label staff as being area experts.
• Xref staff to knowledge areas with a level of competency.
• Define training courses/schemas.
  • Track staff completion of courses.
• Manage links to learning resources.
• Some kind of find-a-mentor scheme.
  • Find peers to pair with?
• Set staff as available to provide mentorship.
• Training request system so users can request training?

• Integration with existing tools would encourage adoption.
• Could be abused to allow microsoft style stack-ranking where they fire the "weakest" people. Ideally the implementation would be resistant to this. If we can be vocal about that resistance we might get a lot of thumbs up from engineers and technical people and get a foot in the door that way.

This sounds like a large project and something HR departments have on a broader scale, as far as I know. That said, I don't know what sort of tools are out there specific to technical departments. If we focused on developers I could see it really useful if we integrated with the likes of JIRA and Stash to help highlight resource bottlenecks and areas for further training.

I'd be very interested in exploring this. These sort of productivity tools would be best to do along-side another project, in my opinion. To build them up how we'd use them as a small team first. Then scale up. We could use the tool for managing the development of the tool though, I guess...
