I just went through the new steps, and noticed the handbook may have outdated steps. I'd love a check with GSA IT to make sure I captured the new steps from them below.

The current steps:

  1. Open the GSA Self Service application on your MacBook and select "SmartCard/PIV" from the lefthand filter. You should see two applications: Smart Card Certificate Validation and Map Smartcard - Catalina
  2. Plug a card reader into your laptop and insert your card
  3. Click "Test" on the Smart Card Certificate Validation application in Self Service. Wait for a moment while it confirms your card is good to go. Contact IT if your certificate does not validate
  4. Click "Install" on Map Smartcard - Catalina. Wait until this finishes installing. Do not remove your card.
  5. Now you can remove your card and log out of your computer. You are all set up to follow the login steps below. Note: DO NOT REBOOT. This will brick the machine. Please only Log Out only.

My suggested edits:

  1. Open the GSA Self Service application on your MacBook and select "NEW SmartCard-PIV" from the lefthand filter. You should see two applications: Idaxis PIV Card Reader Driver Installer and Map Smartcard
  2. Plug a card reader into your laptop and insert your card
  3. Click "Map" on the Map Smartcard application in Self Service. If it says "Your card contains the required certs" proceed to the next step. If it does not, please contact GSA IT.
  4. Your card will now map itself, and will display a "successfully added" message.
  5. After it pops up notifying you of a successful mapping, click the apple logo top left, then "Log Out". Note: DO NOT REBOOT. This will brick the machine. Please only Log Out only.
  6. When logging back in, it should ask for your pin to. your PIV. After entering the pin, it will ask for the keychain password which is your local Mac account password. Your card is set up and you can now use the login steps below.
