Those are the main products. Of note that NGWMN Data Portal serves construction and lithology from USGS sites, which other applications do not currently serve. However, as part of the NWIS Modernization effort, we will start to serve those data types in NWIS over the next several years. We may want to pull in the project lead for that. Also, there's another effort at USGS to serve JUST underground data (such as construction and lithology), but no water-level or water-quality data.
@chopkins-usgs that's helpful to know!
A few questions:
just underground
data project be served through a new product, or an existing product? Or is that not known yet?I am not sure the scope of the Just Underground data project. We can pull in the project lead for more info.
For the NWIS Modernization effort, we will finally turn public a database we have at USGS that has always been internal. It will requite a lot of work to clean data and figure out what is worthy of publishing. This initial data cleaning and population has already been done for any USGS site in NGWMN Data Portal. However, there are hundreds of thousands of GW sites in the USGS database, so it will be a significant lift. Also of note: there is quite a lack of these types of data for the majority of GW sites.
Our summary of these sites is at the bottom of https://app.mural.co/t/gsa6/m/gsa6/1633545432112/190da40465b1dc41199f6149470e3f41868e2db3
First draft of a doc on this is at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Nyfe4eYeu_LxccJB7yY1YHgT7tEh8brcQS4pcxLtUkk/edit#
@neilmb to review the doc one more time and add a discussion section including the NGWMN data portal's special fields and filtering.
Background We have learned a lot about groundwater data and how it gets delivered at USGS. We want a document that summarizes what we learns and can be linked to from our final reports to give context for what we decide.
