Abandon GitHub #926

Reading through some of these issues, one statement stood out the most: Politics have no place in the Foss community

While GitHub may offer a free tier, as far as I know, they are NOT open source.

I have no solution as to how to get access to your repositories again, but for the future I recommend self hosting GitLab Community Edition. I'm not 100% this will be a good solution, but it is definitely a decent temporary one. Feature wise it should be the same for the most part.

A further, more long term goal, I would like to see (and contribute to) would be for us as a community to build our own git front end. One that is fully managed by the FOSS community, and not a company that may be forced to implement restrictions because of their country's government.

How do you all feel about this?

And GitLab is open source? Well the Community Edition itself it's "Freemium Source", GitLab themselves are still a Company. Whilst you "always" (hopefully) will be able to run their CE edition on-premise; GitLab itself is a Company.

Also GitLab isn't fully managed by the FOSS community. 70%+ of GitLab CE contributions come from or GitHub or GitLab employees.

PS: 40%+ of GitLab Engine is based on Open Source GitHub modules.

And you're totally wrong about politics doesn't have space in the FOSS community. Seriously from where you got this information?

@ovflowd Just a quick 5 points for you, as this is a more serious thing than a reddit post.

  1. There was no claim made that GitLab is FOSS. Only that using a self hosted GitLab CE would be a decent temporary solution.

  2. Correct, GitLab is a company. Which is why I included specification by saying "Community Edition", not "Use EE or make an account on their website!"

  3. Those GitHub employees are in fact contributing to open source when they make contributions to GitLab CE. That doesn't change simply because they are employed by another company. Lots of tech companies encourage their employees to contribute to open source, and it makes sense they would contribute to a project similar to what they know best.

  4. If you're so sure that global politics belong in the FOSS community, please elaborate and explain why instead of childishly saying "nuh uh, you're wrong". People often change their opinions when provided relevant information.

  5. Please pay attention when you are reading something. There are already enough people in the world just trying to start shit.

PS: I would also recommend you think more carefully before you act.
