More contrast on vert mask, ei. Negative and positive at same time (to retain volume) so that when sack inflates, surrounding geo deflates.(done as well as I could figure out, not ideal but moving onto something else now)
Substance idea:
Pretty sure there's a Normal to Height function in the normals section. Would be useful for driving a significant amount of the texture work for the vents
