When a Vanilla Minecraft redstone component reads redstone power through a block, there doesn't appear to be a signal being transferred as expected.
Instead, I noticed that when attaching the red alloy wire to the top of a block sitting above the wire itself, the power appears to be transferred to the opposite block below:
(Additionally, I noticed that breaking / placing the wire often doesn't update the comparator.)
