pep8 in dev/orthogonal #37

mostly code formatting but also

removing a duplicate function
using point2d instead of point
removing unused imports

I'm about to approve this, but in general it's not worth cleaning up stuff in dev/, since its mostly just around for historical record and also not doctested (and hence a slight chance of the cleanup causing a regression).
