The builds on RTD and locally stopped working like 2 weeks ago. It took me a while to figure out which extension is at fault, because the issue was a subtle dependency conflict that I couldn't pinpoint exactly. It turns out that removing the m2r2 dependency solves the problem. A possible replacement is myst-parser, but so far I have not found a solution to include README.md from the top-level directory. Possible solutions are:
Stop including README into the docs
Create a redundant copy of README in doc (e.g. done by pytreedb)
Create a symlink to the README, but then local builds on Windows do not work anymore
