Feature request : search for attributes as well #2

Hi !

Thanks for your great plugin, which is really time saving.

But unfortunately, in most cases I encounter, I need to perform searches with fields data instead of IDs. Would it be possible to have a drop-down menu allowing to choose the field ?

Simple usage scenario : for land lots with lot numbers, the number won't necessarily be the feature's IDs.

Hi Olivier,

I always wondered if it is a good idea or not to integrate such feature.

Mainly because you can do it in the attribute table. Also, because it's a different type of search: looping over all feature to test if it corresponds versus requesting a feature at a given ID. Also, you have to deal with multiple returns. All this is easily feasible, and I would to it with pleasure, but I am not sure it's right...

What do you think? Do you think it would bring a noticeable improvement over the attribute table?

It's true that the feature would be quite similar than attribute table's search box, but still, the additional features and it's compact interface would make it much more practical to use for a "quick search".

I mean, right now, when you just want to know "where the land lot #23", you have to open the attribute table, choose the field, enter the search string, click on "zoom on selected features", close the attribute table (since it takes too much space on-screen), and voila.

That's 5 steps, where it's only one with your plugin (plus you have better control of what the search does). So as soon that you have to check features one after the other, your plugin would make it much better than the attribute's table.

Btw, I just fixed the comptaibility for QGIS 1.8. So go for version 2.1.....
