As suggested, I changed the 'max_allowed_packet' size to 500M in /etc/mysql/my.cnf. The value was previously set to
max_allowed_packet = 32M
which is a relatively large size. However, some help forums still recommended increasing the allowed size to 500M. If the problem persists, let me know.

The issue persists:
A combination of setting 'max_allowed_packet=500M' in my.cnf and restarting the MySQL server with 'service mysql restart' seems to have resolved this issue and significantly improved performance issues.
After some time passed, the error returned and the performance issues lapsed to their old state:
