2 years ago I wanted to take the opportunity to launch the discussion around 5G Media Streaming being gradually added to the 5G-MAG Reference Tools.
Johann created this simple diagram to get seamless switching between unicast and broadcast in place. See details below. Johann kindly told me that hew views the CDN and Control as an application for now, but we were checking on what 3GPP provides for this. I believe there are two from a 3GPP perspective options for running the service/application:
- classical Rel-12 MBMS with seamless switching and possibly even MooD.
- 5G Media streaming as an envelope and then making LTE-based 5G Broadcast a distribution.
I discussed this internally and with 5G-MAG people whether there is a benefit to either do this setup below with classical MBMS Rel-12 or 5GMS: We came to the conclusion that for different reasons, making this based on 5G Media Streaming is significantly better. Example reasons:
- The Media AF and AS can be hosted externally by the broadcast operator. You can have two different networks, a BNO and MNO.
- The 5G MS functionalities such as consumption and metrics reporting are great functions for the operation.
- We have a modern and extensible architecture, both from the client (using MSH to network) using REST-based calls as defined in 5GMS
- We also have a modern architecture on the interfaces for 5G Media Streaming
- We introduce 5G media streaming with a very concrete use case into the 5G-MAG Reference tools
- We are in the process in Rel-17 to attach eMBMS to 5G Media Streaming
- LTE-based 5G Broadcast is more naturally integrated into the 5G System w/o having to deal with core network interworking.
What are needed as next steps: 1) I will provide a contribution to SA4 that progresses the work on 5GMS via eMBMS. The below scenario is an important collaboration scenario. If you want to review and possibly support, let me know and I try to share in advance. 2) It would be good to setup a call, possibly after SA4#116e to identify all relevant 5GMS functionalities that are helpful for the below operation and beyond – Jordi can you do so. 3) In the intermediate, Johann you may check TS26.501 (Collaboration scenario 3 in Annex A) and TS 26.512 on Consumption Reporting and Metrics Reporting for a first set of functions. Describe the solution you'd like implement a feedback loop to a control system to get information about how many users watching what from 5G BC and/or OTT. Based on actual usage and threshold value (users per service per region) the control system should dynamically (de-)provision services on the 5G BC core the xMB interface.
