AirPods not selected as IO #520

Some people experience a problem when their AirPods are not used by the app for the sound IO. The AirPods are displayed and selected in the app preferences correctly. This was observed when person’s AirPods were named liked “user — AirPod” with the final letter ’s’ in the word AirPods truncated.

The problem could be in the matching of system to user agent audio devices by name. The difference in Unicode string composition has been checked and doesn’t seem to be the cause of the problem.

Another possibility is the name of the sound device. The macOS user interface sets the limit to the maximum number of characters in a bluetooth device name. It is possible that the automatic naming that the AirPods get for some people combined with the way the user agent gets the name from the system conflicts with the way the app gets the name from the system for device mapping.

Current solution to the problem is to rename the AirPods to something shorter.

Do you have it? I couldn’t reproduce it with my devices.
