The Launcher should have folders, and should have a menu like the menu when you hold/swipe right the folders should have a dedicated section in the scrollbar here's a concept image (even the folder icon under the star in the scrollbar is there too cuz im extra) concept 1

Notifications from apps inside the folder would not display their content but instead which app they came from. When you expand the folder the apps would display their notifications as usual.

@N1cknamed Great mockup, looks clean! For the sake of consistency however, I would take use of the existing app swipe menu (the one where you can read notifications and have access to your apps shortcuts) and would let users place apps in there. This means, that a small menu would show up after tapping or swiping on the folder. Furthermore, this concept would also allow users to place apps (or shortcuts and widgets) inside swipe menus of other apps. What do you think?

@8bitPit An implementation of a folder system—as suggested by @N1cknamed and his nice mock-ups—seems very convenient and in-line with the existing UI of Niagara.

It's lovely watching this launcher grow & getting more polished each month. Thank you for your dedication.

i want to try again...

Offline First Web Apps will come.

mobile os'es are a huge thing because of portability and the whole concept of ofwa. a concept that chromebooks also feed upon. even if both are still lacking in the offline support. funny enough, most apps do not work offline was well.

and google don't need folders. all we need is a simple and streamed way to access everything offline or with limited internet connection. again, ofwa.

Niagara is to apps (and should be to installed web apps) what Google is to web services. make it easy to find. without needing categories or folders. no time wasted on my end to organise any data i might need to find!

are you following?

i'm really glad folders are still not implemented. hopefully far from it. they would be the first huge thing towards breaking Niagara.

please, just put the folders aside and focus on so many other issues!

pilpfiction commented 4 years ago

Don't know what the status of this discussion exactly is, nevertheless I just wanted to share how I work with Niagara basically from the beginning.

As I do have many apps, and please don't argue that I should install most of them and bla bla, so I renamed the apps and put the category name in front of the app name.

This way I can still use the clean and intuitive way Niagara was designed, but use a browsing experience which fits better to my needs.

Sorry in case this has been discussed before, if not maybe an idea to consider.

More efficient would be folder. Then you can make your groups. And probably he can make a free grouping for each category.

I have 2 location's Switzerland and USA with different App's and also Clone App's. Without folders would be hard to decide witch app I use now.

pilpfiction commented 4 years ago

More efficient would be folder. Then you can make your groups.

Don't exactly understand why you think it is more efficient to have folders.

I am quite happy to work this way. The main obstacle's, but no show-stoppers though are:

  1. I can use a character only once for a category. But there are often overlaps eg Streaming, Social. But I just have to be creative while finding names for categories.

  2. Sometimes apps are renamed when they are updated.

  3. In the list of my favorite apps, all apps are shown with the category name.

The way I use it may not serve the purpose of everyone and certainly some see with folders or groups much more - whereas I am not aware of what that could be.

For me when I want to listen to eg music I use Amazon Music, Google play Music and YouTube Music. Using Niagara the normal way I need to browse from a to y to choose the app I want. In case I reconsider to take the another music app I need to scroll all the way back. by using the categories I just browse to M for music and choose the app I like to use. Reconsidering the app I like use is simple and I can do it while I see all my music app.

This all becomes more obvious in case you have even more apps in one category, like for financial issues. Here I have a dozen of apps. Simple to find the right one as I just browse to F for finance.

As said this is likely not your use case. But this helps me to contiously use Niagara now for more than a year. If I didn't have this solution, I might have already switched to another launcher, maybe not, I don't know.

JohnHBrady commented 4 years ago

I use Niagara because of its simplicity, so maybe I worry too much about feature creep. Instead of folders I use Niagara's ability to rename apps in the menu. So for example my games are named "Games:Sudoku" and so on. Works as well as a folder for me.

swejmansson commented 4 years ago

I have now used Niagara for quite some time and I dont miss a lot of the features from my previously used "more advanced" launchers. What I sometimes have problem with is to find an app that I cannot remember the name of. I know what I want to do and what it looks like, but cant remember the name. Search function is good but then i miss categories.....

For me it would be perfectly OK to have auto generated categories. By picking up the Google Play categories and make the selection the same way as with letters. Maybe categories on the left side and letters on the right side? Some other peoples have proposed the same, but I wanted to test it on my installed app collection. This is the categories that will show up in my phone: Categories

I think I could live with how the app categories are defined in Play Store: image

Since I live in Sweden and have Swedish language set in the phone some of the apps are unknown to you or will have strange names, sorry for that 😄 As you see I have some pre-installed and some side loaded apps that need to be handled in some way, except fram that it is quite straight forward. ❓ What do you think? Wouldn't it be great to have it like this automatically?❓

It is not perfect, but in many ways good enough. I have five "pay for parking" apps installed all except one is located in "Travel & Local", the last one is in found in "Tools". Think that the developer of the app in the future will move the app to where the competitors have paced theirs.

A further future complement to this automatic category feature could be to have a couple of buttons/drawers placed in the same way that the favourites are. Push it and you get a menu like when you open app shortcuts/notifications. Then you can have favorites/topics/categories in the same place.

Really like what Niagara launcher aim for, Simple, Impactful, Universal and Indipendant! Keep up the good work! 💪 🥇

AndydeCleyre commented 4 years ago

My preferred folder solution:

I don't really care if it's a gesture rather than a button to activate the fold/unfold action.

stanleehub commented 4 years ago

My suggested folder solution.

I propose a minimalist folder/categorisation implementation that fits with existing gestures and aesthetic of the launcher.

  1. All folders are listed a separate category at the top of the application list under the favourite list (star icon). They can be manually sorted within this category.

  2. To add new add folder, select this option at the bottom of the list under Niagara launcher heading. Once folder added they appear under the new folder category with default folder icon.

  3. Tapping on app in application list brings up same menu with additional option to choose an existing folder to add to. This folder will take the icon of the first app in the list.

  4. Open a folder by swiping right if the "tap to open first app in folder" feature is turned on or tapping the folder icon if the "tap to open first app in folder" feature is toggled off in the setting.

  5. Opened folders displays a vertical list of apps with their corresponding notification displaying underneath if present.

  6. Long pressing on a folder brings up same menu as long pressing on an app but with the option of adding to the favorite list on the homescreen, edit folder items, rename folder and delete folder.

  7. Limit max apps in folders to 6 or 8.(optional)

8bitPit commented 4 years ago

Thank you so much everyone for all your ideas. I have never thought there are so many different ways how folders could look & work. Like some of you suggested, I extended Niagara's swipe actions: https://medium.com/niagara-launcher/niagara-pros-swipe-actions-8b45b16ae8c3 What do you think of these pseudo-folders?

8bitPit commented 4 years ago

Also thanks @swejmansson. Yes, I'll plan that swipe actions will categorize themselves (e.g. Swiping on WhatsApp reveals Telegram and vice versa).

Montell2099 commented 4 years ago

What do you think of these pseudo-folders?

I think it's a nice & clean compromise between generic folders & the minimalistic backbone of Niagara. Makes the navigation towards my desired apps even more efficient than before.

For example, I use SoundCloud the most so it's the only music app on my homescreen. But now, with just a quick swipe, I can also access Spotify, Acast & BlackPlayer. For my personal needs it's all I could ask for.

8bitPit commented 4 years ago

@Montell2099 Great to hear, thanks for letting me know :D

wendelcamps commented 4 years ago

I think Niagara launcher is close to perfect and should remain as simple as possible.

My problem is my memory and I can't memorise al the inconsistencies about namegiving of the apps.

It would be easy to be confronted with only the apps I need by filtering. Therefore, I would like to to be able to devide, not by alfabet, but by category.

Wendel camps

AndydeCleyre commented 4 years ago

@wendelcamps Can't you use the new folder-ish implementation to create one top-level item per category?

wendelcamps commented 4 years ago

Yes, I could use the new-folderish implementation, but apps would be hidden a level deeper and more hassle if you can't find the one you are looking for. At the moment i solved my problem by renaming the apps by putting a character at the beginning: A=auto (A maps, A yellowbrick, A cygic....), B=banking, C= etc.. I also put a icon at the beginning of some apps in stead of the character. In that case the apps are grouped at the beginning, together with the apps beginning with digit under the the "#" wich is first after the favorits "☆". I imagine being able to make tags/labels. Each tag/label has a name and an icon. Each app can be labeled/tagged with one or more labels/tags The icons of the labels/tags appear after the ☆ of the favorites on the alfabet-bar The labels/tags behave just like the favorites in the sense that when you have chosen a category only these apps stay on the screen. Above the app-list, when selecting, shows the name (and icon) of the category. Just like choosing the "°" showing "Niagara Launcher" at the end of the alfabet-bar. Maybe there should be a setting to choose between alfabet or categorie for the alfabet-bar (wich becomes then a category-bar)

wodash commented 4 years ago

What I would like to see is to be able to add 'Tags' to the apps - for example I might just tag all my game apps and game related apps as 'Games' , this would allow me to use the search function of the launcher to search for this tag along with the apps matching with search term.

This would help the app stay as streamlined as ever while providing us with virtual folders. And it also allows apps to be a part of multiple 'folders' by adding multiple tags !

wendelcamps commented 4 years ago

I think I found a solution for categories:

  1. In the Settings of Niagara Launcher, set homebutton for searching apps.
  2. Decide which emoji's to use for which categories
  3. Rename the app by adding one or more emoji's after the name of the app.
  4. Search for emoji in your Niagara Launcher.

You can add the emoji at another position in the name of the app, but don't put them in front or the alfabetical order is lost and the app appears on top of the alfabet-bar after the ☆ under '#'.

It would be more comfortable if i could change the alfabet-list into my categorie-list with the emoji's used.

jnino-nino commented 4 years ago

NOTE: I skipped this entire conversation excuse me if this has been suggested. Screenshot_20200307-060514

jnino-nino commented 4 years ago

Here's an idea based on @MatthiasHeil's post. @8bitPit, can you access each app's categorization from the PlayStore? If you can do that, then, it might be possible to implement automatically sorting the existing list into categories. Then, each app will be listed alphabetically or based on usage. I'm thinking of preserving the current list style, but utilizing a different sorting method for the list. Does this make sense to you? Let me try again but by using this example:

"folder mode" displays like this:

  • Games

    • Angry Birds
    • Clash of Clans
  • Messaging

    • Messenger
    • Viber
    • Whatsapp

If you can do this type of sorting for the apps, you might then implement the same gestures to get to each category/folder instead of each letter group. Is this possible?

This is reasonable, similar to the Gnome Applications menu.

Like some of you suggested, I extended Niagara's swipe actions: https://medium.com/niagara-launcher/niagara-pros-swipe-actions-8b45b16ae8c3 What do you think of these pseudo-folders?

So, I tried the pseudo-folders, and while it's a bit odd at the beginning I think it could work if somehow we can still bring notification badges of the apps "stored" inside that pseudo-folder.

As I stated before, my main need for folders in Niagara is do to Android for Work: most apps exist in my apps list as duplicate because I have personal and work versions of each of them. It becomes really hard to select the right one because the name is the same and the only visual queue is the tiny little WORK folder (I use Samsung Galaxy S9). This is not a problem when I use Samsung default launcher because its app list is tabbed when Android for Work is active, and I have a tab for Work apps. In Niagara all those apps and mixed together in the same app list.

I tried to fix this problem with pseudo-folder but I miss the notifications - I have a Work Calendar icon with work versions of Gmail and Slack inside and I need to see notifications for all these apps. having all these apps as favorites does "solve the problem" but it means I have duplicate apps in home screen making it longer than it needs to be.

Paladium72 commented 4 years ago

Any update for fake folder icon's? Would be great to make it possible to upload self made icon's. Have the same problem as seeker. Just not work and privat... USA and Switzerland...😉

wendelcamps commented 4 years ago

Change the name of an app by adding one or more emoji. These wil function as tag. In the search function of the launcher you can search for these tags by entering their emoji. It also will allow multiple tagging of an app. It is not possible to retreive more than one tag in a search. If you want to search for another tag you have to delete the previous one. (Example: Games = 🕹)

Is it possible to use regular pictures small png? That must be clear different icon's. I have 2 sites in different countries. If its possible, us the pictures from Wikipedia. G-icon-usa G-icon-switzerland

And under the flags I can hide all the Apps that I use in this countries.

Is it so difficult to integrate this in the Launcher? Give some clear rules, size etc, and make it as an Button with the same integrity of an app.

TheLimboMan commented 4 years ago

You know what will be simpler and consistent, do the 'hidden apps' approach, a folder could just let a user enter a 'hidden apps' like place but rather than hidden apps it's the folder's name on top :)

I personally use hidden apps like a waste bin anyways, any bloatware I'll just hide it there, it's pretty useful as a bin

I came to Niagara because I wanted a clutter-free experience and I love it for that reason. I understand why some people might want folders, but it feels to me like that would be a step back toward chaos. More buttons, more code complexity, more edge cases for bugs to lurk in, etc.

I'm probably in the minority, but I say Niagara should take a stand against interface complexity. Wear simplicity like a badge of honor. Become the champion of home-screen hygiene and continue to do that brilliantly. Otherwise, it's just another launcher trying to please everyone and being champion of nothing.

I'd love to see an automatic folder category for recently installed apps. I sometimes install apps, and lose track of them (usually when I'm trying out several competing apps for a particular task). A folder that keeps recently installed apps for 2 weeks and auto-removes them (and as a bonus also gives me the user the ability to manually remove them) would be ideal.

Also, in terms of folder design, I vote to bring back the old style iOS folder display and animation. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I really liked that design! In this case, it would be a tree-like shape, indented for visual cue that separates regular items, like so:

- an item
- Open folder item
    - item1
    - item2
    - itemN
- another item

That's a great concept of "app folders" the only issue I've got with it is sometimes it's convenient fo change the main app without reorganizing the whole thing.

if by any chance you feel similar, try kiss launcher. it's simpler and open source. i want to thank peter once again for pointing me there. you can also find some forks there that might please you better.

very rarely i miss just the alphabet browsing, but not once have i felt the need to use it (still got niagara installed for fallback, never used it).

but i'll just remove myself from this topic notifications now. cheers!

I wholeheartedly agree with this. That's the sole reason I'm using Niagara, decided to sign up for the pro version and support the fellow dev. If we keep adding features on top of features, I fear the launcher will lose its focus and become another Nova. Niagara doesn't live in a vacuum, it lives in an environment of constant exposure to stimulus and decision-making. And, for that, I stand against adding this feature.

Yeah I would love a system such as this as well, or perhaps just the choice offered to users. as in swipe left or right and get in between a couple different themes of apps. (which people would be able to sub-divide) While keeping the rest of the UI the same and also when booting from top the launcher. Defaulting to the standard all apps installed dropdown. And not replacing the main ui as such but just offering two or three more 'themed' approaches as well.

I have both an iPhone and a Pixel.

Work requires the iPhone.

I do like the ease of use of an iOS device. (Fwiw, I also own an iPad, and generally work on a Mac book pro), but iOS is way in-configurable for what I want to do.

Maybe for others, its “fine”.

I also miss folders a lot in Niagara. The solution for me is to combine Niagara launcher with Zone Launcher. Then you will have the simplicity of Niagara and also the possibility to have folders/pages accessable from within all apps since Zone Launcher is a "drag from screen edge launcher" I have three pages in Zone Launcher. First one is shortcuts for calling family, social media and communication apps. Second is economy, bank, money transfer etc. Third is apps related to car, VolvoOnCall, parking apps and charge station apps. Sometimes I launch the apps from Niagara but the problem for me is to remember all the names of the apps.

A launcher accessible from within all apps feels great. If Niagara went in this direction it would be nice.

I would like to share how I substituted (or rather added) folders in Niagara. I think this can solve folder problem temporarily for many users.

Let's consider I want to group all the messaging apps together in a folder.

Thses apps can also be accessed directly from the list as usual. I use black icons for folders to differenciate them from other apps.

Wow, I believe this is the longest Niagara issue thread yet; thank you so much, everyone, for submitting your ideas and helping each other 😀 I'm happy to announce Niagara Launcher now officially supports (pop-up) folders with the pop-up-date: https://medium.com/niagara-launcher/pop-up-date-4a5d3522df2d. Thanks again!
