When an app's icon changes, it disappears from favorites #2304

Describe the bug

In some apps, e.g. Telegram, it is possible to change the app's icon. When I do it through Telegram settings, Telegram disappears from my favorites. It would be an easily recoverable loss if there weren't pop-ups linked to app shortcuts on the favorites screen, but I do use that feature: tapping on Telegram, I open Telegram, and swiping right I see quick links to several other apps - it's really smart and convenient; thus, losing the app shortcut together with all the manually defined pop-ups is very uncomfortable. Please fix that.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Add Telegram to your favorites.
  2. Open Telegram.
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. Go to Chat Settings.
  5. Find "App Icon".
  6. Choose another icon.
  7. Telegram will restart.
  8. You will see its shortcut has disappeared from your favorites.

Hi @ilyaksv, Thank you for your patience and for bringing this issue to our attention! Here's a little explanation on why this happens: The app icons on the launcher represent the launcher activities of apps, which serve as their entry points. Sometimes, apps may have multiple launcher activities. For example, Chrome app and its in-app shortcuts (New tab, Private tab etc.) or offer multiple icons which have their own activities (Telegram or DuckDuckGo app). Demo: Multiple App Icons.jpg

So when a user changes the app icon from within the native app settings, the launcher thinks the user has removed the old activity and added a new one (same as re-installing the app). Unfortunately, at the moment, we don't have a way to identify whether these activities belong to the same app. However, we are actively looking for a solution that will allow us to prevent this from happening when you switch the app icons. Rest assured, we will update the issue once we find a fix. Until then, we advise that you don't switch the app icon from the app settings so that you don't lose the manually added apps and shortcuts from the Telegram pop-up.

I'm having the same issue. But it happens when certain apps get updated. Like Magisk manager. Every time I update it, the icon disappears from the home screen and all the links in the pop up go with it. Quite an annoying bug.
