Jason, I am working with the Overleaf staff on some other issues. I will raise this problem where warnings are not shown with them.
Greg
Is this error outstanding or fixed in Overleaf?
Looks like it's still there. Adding a blank optional argument to \author generates no warnings or errors but produces a nearly blank document.

On overleaf, having a blank or malformed optional argument to the \author command produces a blank document on Overleaf with no warnings or errors. The documentation states that this should produce a warning.
This is pernicious because without warnings there is no way to debug the issue.
Minimal working example:
\documentclass{aastex61} \begin{document} \title{Minimal Working Example} %\author[]{Jason T.\ Wright} %This crashes Overleaf without warning \author{Jason T.\ Wright} %This line is fine \affil{affiliation} \section{section} \end{document}
