This is a pypy3.5-compatible version of #178.
Before:
python start.py 125.27s user 25.14s system 193% cpu 1:17.73 total
python start.py 120.16s user 24.46s system 195% cpu 1:13.86 total
After
python start.py 113.72s user 23.42s system 199% cpu 1:08.88 total
python start.py 117.99s user 24.03s system 197% cpu 1:11.99 total
