ABIS github org #2

Idea: create an organisation within github for all ABIS related repos.

ABISprotocol commented 10 years ago

This is a great idea, and I look forward to this. I'll think about this some more and soon add thoughts relating to timing and other details.

ABISprotocol commented 10 years ago

After some further thought on this, I'm wondering, regarding timing, should we wait on this item until we hear back regarding the grant application, the results of which will supposedly be sent out soon?

I received an e-mail about an hour ago from Bitcoin Foundation staff charged with some portions of the review the numerous (about 34 total) grant proposals, which included ABIS. (Note that earlier we found that our ABIS project was in the top 16 of the projects in terms of a Grant Committee's preliminary ranking of projects before the Foundation Board's final review and decision.) The following is a copy of the text of that e-mail as sent from Brian Egan:

- "Thank you for your grant proposal submission. I’m sorry, but your proposal was not selected by the Board for this round of our grants program. We had many excellent proposals this quarter and, unfortunately, we cannot fund all of them. Please keep an eye on our blog if you’d like to resubmit an updated proposal or submit a completely new one for our next open round of proposals.

Thanks again for your interest in our grant program and best of luck on your project!"-

An additional note I have, is that the (very recent) changes in Bitcoin Foundation Board makeup will likely contribute to a significant decrease in quality and luster in the Board over the next several years ~ and its ability to understand Bitcoin as a network as well as conduct business as a Board over time is already observably waning, and will now only grow measurably and noticeably worse. We should not return to the Board for business although of course I will continue to contribute periodically on github with the Bitcoin Foundation Education Committee repository to the extent it is possible or feasible.

My previous question about whether we should wait on this github organization issue due to timing of the grant is thus now moot and no longer a concern.

So, let's have some further discussion here about making an organization within github for all ABIS related repositories now that the timing issue has been solved. There will always be other funding opportunities for ABIS.

Cheers!

@ktorn What do you propose the organization name should be? I am not sure that the organization name can be ABIS or ABISprotocol due to the constraints of organization naming in Github, see also these notes on migrating to organization (includes details about how to handle an already forked repository).

@ktorn Bumping this item for further discussion. It got left off in June of last year and I am reawakening it.

ktorn commented 9 years ago

@ABISprotocol I'd just come up with a brand new name and create a new github organisation accordingly. You can clone the existing content from ABISprotocol and add references in the old repo pointing at the new one(s). Keeping the old repo intact is interesting for historical reasons.

ABISprotocol commented 9 years ago

@ktorn OK, thank you. I'll read up on that and make sure I will do it right and then get it all done as a new organization, and will keep the old repo. I'm guessing this will be done in a few days ~ school's out and the weekend is sure to be wild, but I am serious about seeing this get done after so long.
