The input would be a composition matrix with proportions or areas as cell values (possibly sparse representation). Rows would have their own XY, columns would be the veg/soil classes. This would only work for veg OR soil (i.e. not combined).
Possibly, the structure of the SpatialPointsSpareMatrix thingie also needs to be determined (relates to STARS and mefa4).
