6 years ago I think this went well. PhD students seemed to enjoy it and I saw a lot of continuing discussions after it had wrapped up.

6 years ago I think this went well. PhD students seemed to enjoy it and I saw a lot of continuing discussions after it had wrapped up.
We had a chat a few meetings ago about running a "speed dating" session where everyone gets a chance to get to know each other. It was suggested that this be over coffee at first but I don't know that we want to over-stimulate everyone with caffeine. Perhaps I'll make some nice iced teas or something.
I don't want to make this too formal, but the aim is to have everyone talk to a few people that they don't know (i.e. they work at a different institution and you aren't already collaborating). Would it be helpful to have a few questions to help break the ice?
