Improving the assembly #70

I've merged my experimental assembly routines and @cortner's mt_assemble into dev-assemble. @tjjarvinen, would you please add your new routine to that branch as well (keeping the old ones)?

Let's collaborate here until we all agree on something. I'd also like to enable batching before we merge.

I made PR #71 to add the assemble here. I also added batching to the new version.
