WebISO Integration for authenticated users #5

Closed byee01 closed 12 years ago

byee01 commented 12 years ago

I should only be able to create and modify events if I log in with my WebISO account first.

vivek-pai commented 12 years ago

I'm taking charge of this issue. We can't implement WebISO until we have the machine to place the rails app on.

byee01 commented 12 years ago

What requirements should the machine meet in order to run Teudu, upload images, and authenticate users on?

vivek-pai commented 12 years ago

Sorry, I should clarify...Eric had already told me he had a machine for the site (an old laptop). He's in the process of reacquiring it (though, I'm not sure what the status of that is).

byee01 commented 12 years ago

I'll close this for now then.

Ok, I spoke with Catherine last week. Here's the update:

SCS is a bit reluctant to give us server space. The reason for this is because our application could take down an SCS server if we have bugs or if our site is attacked. Catherine requested a more in-depth proposal of what we need and why we need it, preferably in bullet format.

Can someone write assigned to this task write this up? Basically it should include: -# of people with access (keep it low) -Technical requirements -Broadly, what we're doing -Why we need SCS space -Is our site secure?

I just emailed Catherine the above request. We'll see what happens. At the very least, we should be able to use Eric's laptop as a server.

AveshCSingh commented 12 years ago

We have permission from ACM's advisor, Catherine Copetas, to integrate WebISO into the server running on Eric's laptop. Catherine's email is copetas@cs.cmu.edu, and her Andrew ID is copetas.

I am working on getting us space on an SCS server, likely one of the backup servers. I'll keep everyone updated on this via comments on this Issue.

SCS server space is still uncertain. I'm currently waiting to hear back from some Unix guru who hopefully can give us a concrete answer.

I have reached out to a couple of people from Computer Club and Robotics who, according to Catherine, may have free space available in their machine room.

Also, it just hit me: I am involved in Engineers Without Borders at CMU. We have an office in the Margaret Morrison building on Margaret Morrison street (not the building in front of the UC). I do not think it would be a problem if we kept the machine there. Vivek, would this work?

AveshCSingh commented 12 years ago

Also Vivek, do you know how much the Data Charge will be? I should run this by Eric.

vivek-pai commented 12 years ago

Nah, the Margaret Morrison building won't work...it's considered a residential building.

This Unix guru...let him know we have everything set up in an Ubuntu VM, so we can easily just load it if they have virtual machine server or something.

Let me know what the Computer Club/Robotics club says. Also, I realize that you should probably do the network registration...since I'm graduating, I don't want them to wipe the registration that I make when they deactivate my account.

Catherine, our advisor, said that we would be hit with a monthly data charge if we keep the machine a room on campus. I guess we will find out more about that once we find a place for the machine.

AveshCSingh commented 12 years ago

About the unix guy: I can't get his email or name from Catherine unfortunately, but have reminded him to call me (through Catherine's correspondence) twice. Still haven't heard back.

The Computer Club could pan out. We're exchanging email right now.
