Discovery metadata for model output #45

Open markusfiebig opened 4 months ago

Define top-level metadata items needed to discover model products. The concept should be generic enough to be extended to model output not currently included. Should allow future extension towards satellite data products.

Hi Markus, relaying information that I've received from Dene, the essentials that we wish to add are:

model type (e.g. box, column, 2D, 3D), projection (e.g. regular, rotated, lambert, mercator, stereographic), domain coverage (e.g. global, regional, urban, nesting, trajectory), operational timescale (nowcast, forecast, hindcast, etc.), operational type (deterministic, ensemble, backward/inverse, assimilation).

We also have more information in google docs. I will email them to you.

Unsolicited advice. Adding schema and Metadata terms and structure to a taxonomy, is not a great idea. Essentially it require using taxonomic relations to define the relationship between terms, when there more specific terms to define those relationships using ontology terms such as owl and a number of existing ontologies. It clouds the notion of a taxonomy - a hierarchy of terms and make it harder to use by software agents. A better approach is to create a semantic schema (+ ontology). As it allows more modular and specific usage.

Ok, thanks for the note. I've relayed this to the team and we'll take a look.

thanks @Elliott-Rose-BSC. If my comment is not clear, I can try to clarify a bit more my perspective or answer questions you and the team might have (probably more efficient over a video-call).

Also, in https://github.com/ACTRIS-Data-Centre/actris-vocabulary/pull/47#issuecomment-2055627232 I mentioned my interest to contribute to ACTRIS vocabulary, but got no reply on that
