To investigate: will we run into issues with commas vs. periods as users in different regions serialize the JSON?

Per the spec (i.e., large picture) on json.org and numerous online comments to the same effect, use of commas in numbers are not permitted in json. The decimal separator in valid json is "." and thousands separators are not used.
