Format codebase #85

Starting to try and get the codebase into a more maintainable state. Starting with some formatting. Changes include:

Black formatter for style
isort for import sorting
autoflake for automatically removing unused imports (there were a lot of them)
ruff used as a linter, not configured to check much as tests are needed to do these changes with more confidence
