It should be clear to someone unfamiliar with the docs if they are looking at a development branch rather than a published release, and how to get to the latter. E.g. as per this experiment:
For the above experiment the link takes you to the index of releases (tags). Possibly it go to the equivalent page of the default tree (usually the most recent release) if that exists or the root of the default tree if not.
Also there could be a warning if you're looking at an older release?
