During boot,if headphones are connected,then media or call sound doesn't work at all with headphones,device doesn't recognize them,only reboot with them detached fixes it. Bluetooth headsets or speakers needs media to play first on device speakers without connecting Bluetooth,then and only then media plays through Bluetooth devices

For me the headphones never work. I tried rebooting with the headphones unplugged, but it's still not working. I keep hearing clicking noises from the speakers. Sound always comes from the speakers.

I would suggest you temporary workaround,install soundabout from play store give it root permissions,it has option to forcefully route audio to headphone, Bluetooth etc

I tried the SoundAbout app but it doesn't work. I think that it's because it doesn't request root access. Any way I can trigger the request?

Try this,first open SuperSU,leave it in background,clear data of soundabout,now open app,you should be getting su request now if you are rooted.
