dpkg 1.21.18 (Jan 2023) now has zstd support, so the points in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=892664 are relevant again. The good thing about zstd is that it's cool and shiny it decompresses fast regardless of compression level. The files are larger than xz, but again it's faster than gzip and smaller than lz4.
