Software vendors like us should^1 ship our own completions in

/usr/share/fish/vendor_completions.d, or
~/.local/share/fish/vendor_completions.d (controlled by the XDG_DATA_HOME environment variable).

Installing to share/fish/completions breaks non-FHS distributions like NixOS from finding these completion files.
