Also adds merging reference objects instead of replacing them Things left to do:

[x] Fix whatever makes that one test failing
[ ] Add tests

Hey, sorry this hasn't gone anywhere but I was hoping you'd be able to add some tests as the your task list did have it on there. If you can add some tests and ping me I'll be more than happy to merge.
