Legacy Bug ID: 1215 Author: Edmar Edmar Teixeira Date: 2010-11-03 16:57:55 +0000 UTC

STEP 1: PROPOSAL

Short description of the concept or proposed improvements:

Recent studies have provided a better understanding of lucerne physiology and additional datasets for model testing. However, the original APSIM-plant code is not suited to accomodate all new concepts and modelling methodologies now available.  Therefore, we propose that improvements in the lucerne model occur directly within the APSIM-Plant2 framework.

Rationale and Justification: Implementation of lucerne in Plant2 will allow easier collaboration due to faster implementation of new modelling concepts.

Details of the proposed improvements:

The model will be reimplemented in the Plant2 framework using much of the existing capability. The new version of the model will be tested on the extensive test sets.

Implications for users:

The broad use of the model requires an extensive testing of the model across a wide range of environments and farming systems. The existing test sets will provide much of what is required. Any deficiency will be identified and the test suite enhanced where necessary.

A major implication for users will also be the improved efficiency in testing and developing new model processes within the lucerne model. The plant2 framework has been designed for this purpose.

Email sent to E Teixeira 01/12/10 as follows:

Dear Edmar,

I wish to acknowledge submission of APSIM Task ID 1215 - "APSIM Lucerne Implementation in Plant2". http://www.apsim.info/BugTracker/edit_bug.aspx?id=1215

The Reference Panel consider that this and a number of other tasks, is linked to a major review of .NET implementation within APSIM.

This review of .NET implementation will be completed by early February 2011, after which I will contact you with an update.

Regards

Email Sent to Edmar Teixeira (CC to Andrew Moore and Hamish Brown) on 04/04/11:

Dear Edmar,

I refer to APSIM Task ID 1215 - APSIM Lucerne Implementation in Plant2 http://www.apsim.info/BugTracker/sv-major_tasks.aspx?id=1215

You will remember that this Task was linked to a proposal to move the APSIM engine and components to the .NET framework. After due consideration this move to .NET has the in-principle support of the APSIM Initiative (AI). To this end, the Reference Panel (RP) has approved that the task proceed to Implementation (Step 3 in the attached Process for Incorporating Improvements into APSIM), subject to certain conditions.

These conditions relate to a clearer statement around functionality, in particular, design specifications relating to 1) what will be ported across from the existing model and 2) what will be new functionality.

Subject to the above issues being addressed, the next step is for you to undertake implementation and provide all the relevant documentation (e.g. science documentation, validation data, software code etc.).

I also need to flag that this task may be impacted by a proposal from Plant and Food Research to negotiate a separate APSIM enterprise licence. As it stands now, the task sits under the standard APSIM licensing framework, however that may change under an enterprise licence.

Andrew Moore is the RP contact for this Task and would be happy to discuss the issue with you in more detail.

Regards

Chris Murphy
