STEP 1: PROPOSAL

Short description of the concept or proposed improvements: A banana modelling capability is proposed to be added to the APSIM framework. The driver of this proposal is funding secured from the Reef Rescue Research and Development Program, and consequently water quality impacts (particularly N) of management practices is the focus. Modelling the N balance on the banana cropping system is a primary driver.

Rationale and Justification: Currently, APSIM is used in the Reef Rescue Monitoring and Evaluation Program to determine the economic and water quality impacts of management practises in sugarcane. This information is used by economic and catchment modellers to develop annual Reef Report Cards, which are submitted to the Australian Government. The Reef Rescue Research and Development Program has approved funding of a project titled “Development of a banana modelling capability to enhance reporting of Reef Rescue outcomes” to add the banana landuse to the APSIM modelling environment. The Reef Rescue Monitoring and Evaluation Program will use the banana model to evaluate the water quality and economic impacts of management practices in the banana industry, and this information will be used by economic and catchment modellers to enhance the annual Reef Report Cards.

Details of the proposed improvements: The APSIM banana model will be developed in the APSIM Plant2 Framework using approaches also developed for other tree/horticultural crops.  Test datasets and any extra Plant2 functionality will be incorporated back into the APSIM version control system.  All tests will be added to the APSIM test set.

Implications for users: The work should be mostly self contained within the Plant2 code base and so should have very little impact on other APSIM users.  Improvements or new Plant2 functionality will be available for all plant model developers.

Subject: APSIM Task ID 1280 - New Banana Model developed in Plant2 framework

Dear Tony,

I refer to APSIM Task ID 1280 - New Banana Model developed in Plant2 framework http://www.apsim.info/BugTracker/sv-major_tasks.aspx?id=1280

The APSIM Initiative Reference Panel (RP) has approved the above task to proceed to Implementation (Step 3 in the attached Process for Incorporating Improvements into APSIM), subject to clarification of some listed below.

The RP noted the resource management focus of this proposed model and has requested some additional details around how you will be addressing the production focus (including testing against data). A short description of how you plan to address this issue along with a literature base, would be a useful addition to your proposal.

After providing this information, the next step is for you to undertake implementation of this improvement and provide all the relevant documentation (e.g. science documentation, validation data, software code etc.). This will then be reviewed (Step 4) prior to final approval to incorporate the improvement into APSIM.

Erik van Oosterom is the RP contact for this Task and would be happy to discuss the issue with you in more detail

Regards

Chris Murphy Principal Project Officer (APSIM)
